Feeding America was founded in 1979 by John van Hengel to support underserved Americans facing hunger by inventing the concept of food banks. Today, they are the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, with a network of food banks nationwide.
Food Forward was founded in 2009 by Rick Nahmias to deliver fresh surplus groceries to people experiencing food insecurity and malnutrition. Today, they continue to fight hunger and reduce food waste across 12 California counties.
The Food Recovery Network was founded in 2011 by four students at the University of Maryland to recover surplus dining hall food from their campus. Today, they are the largest student-led movement fighting food waste and working to end hunger in the US.
Food Rescue US was founded in 2011 by Jeff Schacher and Kevin Mullins to create a sustainable and scalable food rescue model that combats both food insecurity and food waste. Today, they engage volunteers to help reduce food losses in multiple locations nationwide.
Forgotten Harvest was founded in 1990 by Dr. Nancy Fishman to rescue food surplus and deliver it free-of-charge to emergency food providers in Detroit. Today, they continue to help tens of thousands of people to bridge the income gap and secure basic life necessities for themselves and their families.
City Harvest was founded in 1982 by a group of New Yorkers to direct surplus food to underserved or food insecure residents. Today, they are New York City’s largest food rescue organization, helping to feed millions of citizens struggling to make ends meet.
We Don’t Waste was founded in 2009 by Arlan Preblud to deliver excess food from caterers to local food banks, after noticing how much quality food was going to waste. Today, the charity is one of the largest food recovery organizations in Colorado.
Food Gatherers was founded in 1988 in Michigan by Paul Saginaw to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes. Today, the charity combats food waste and food insecurity by providing healthy meals in accessible ways across communities.
